Disability Resource

Statement of Mission:

The unique feature of Spicer & Associates is its multi professional approach to the field of physical, emotional, and cognitive disabilities. Practically all of the information, products, and resources available today for healthcare professionals and parents rely on a one-dimensional model. Spicer & Associates remedies this situation by respecting the global nature of a person, with or without a disability, and the interconnectedness of all members of a society.

Social workers, family members, individuals with disabilities, clinicians, registered nurses, qualified mental retardation practitioners, social policy makers, and special education instructors all offer their own unique perspective. All of these voices need to be heard in determining the services, products, policies, and practices for individuals with disabilities. However, most important is the voice of the person with a disability. For this reason, the root of all movements should start with this goal in mind.

It is therefore an honor to offer the services of Spicer & Associates to individuals with disabilities, individuals assisting persons with disabilities, and family members of a person with a disability.

Paul Spicer

P aul Spicer, owner of Spicer & Associates, earned degrees in both Psychology and Sociology and has a lifetime of promoting community inclusion for individuals with disabilities. Growing up as a child in Charlottesville, Virginia, Paul was afforded a hands on education by his mother who was a progressive leader in the movement for the rights of individuals with disabilities. Paul’s mother, one of the first in the community to offer integrated therapeutic recreation and social options to individuals with and without disabilities, introduced him to the skills necessary in assisting special populations.

With a career focused on continuing this approach,  Paul was recently

asked to speak before the Health Worlds Asia Congress, at the Putra World Trade Center in Malaysia, as well for the Inspire the World To Fitness Campaign.  In addition, his most recent publication, entitled The Therapeutic Value of Creative Writing, will be debuted by Venture Publishing, this Spring.  Paul has also released a widely utilized healthcare publication, entitled Individualized Service Plans: Empowering People with Disabilities by Author House Publishing.  He has been recognized as an exceptional leader for his membership and activism in the Special Olympics, The Arc (formally Association for Retarded Citizens), National Association of QMRPs, American Association on Mental Retardation, as well as state and local government agencies. In addition, he has served as a honorary judge for the Ms Wheelchair Virginia statewide competitions.

Paul has led various healthcare organizations, including day support facilities, residential services, assisted living, vocational training, therapeutic recreation, and geriatrics. Paul has also served as a continuing education instructor, editor, grant writer, and marketing consultant. Other published titles include Creative Writing for Individuals with Disabilities, Exercise for Individuals with Disabilities, The Goal Writer's Handbook, and various featured articles in publications such as IDEA, DSW Fitness, Audacity Magazine, Careers & the DisABLED , and Personal Trainer Magazine.

In 2002, Paul gathered an impressive group of professionals from a variety of healthcare disciplines to research and create quality products and services that would outshine any currently available today.  Since that time Spicer & Associates has grown to include an array of wellness topics and resources.  For these efforts Paul was awarded Style Weekly's "Top 40 Under 40" and has been featured in Richmond Magazine

Currently, Paul is expanding Richmond based Spicer & Associates, LLC by contracting with such international organizations as The Jankosseen Group, based out of Basel, Switzerland.  Such collaboration has seen Spicer & Associates handling international sales for Jankosseen's second annual Health Worlds Asia conference to be held in Singapore, at the Biopolis Biomedical Research hub, as well as Sydney, Australia. In addition, Paul has sought out other associates, such as 501c3cast and TecAccess, to work together on improving universal design and Section 508 conformance relating to emerging technology for persons with disabilities. In addition to his disability and healthcare initiatives related to the disability population, Paul operates Spicer Marketing, Island Lowdown Press, and is the co-founder of Compleo.

At the root of each product, publication, consultative service, and collaboration is a genuine respect for the unique qualities of all individuals, with or without a disability.
